Published in 1986 to accompany the landmark exhibition at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., Henri Matisse: The Early Years in Nice, 1916–1930 explores one of the richest and most distinctive periods of Matisse’s career.
During these years, Matisse developed the luminous interiors, still lifes, landscapes, portraits, and odalisques that came to define his celebrated Nice period. The exhibition brought together more than 170 paintings, many of which had rarely or never been exhibited publicly before.
