Maurice Prendergast (1858–1924) was one of the most distinctive American Post-Impressionist artists of the early 20th century. Working across oil, watercolor, and monotype, he was celebrated for his luminous colors, delicate compositions, and distinctive mosaic-like style. Though he exhibited with The Eight, Prendergast’s decorative, poetic approach set his work apart from the group’s more realist intentions.
Published by the Terra Museum of American Art in 1984, Monotypes by Maurice Prendergast explores the artist’s monotype work through beautifully reproduced examples and biographical text. With 159 pages of artwork and commentary, this generously illustrated volume offers an intimate look at a lesser-known but fascinating aspect of Prendergast’s practice.
A beautiful addition to a collection of vintage art books, particularly for admirers of American Impressionism, Post-Impressionism, and early modern American art.
