A beautiful first English edition devoted entirely to one of Henri Matisse’s most celebrated late-career innovations — his paper cut-outs.
Written by Jean Guichard-Meili and translated from the original French edition, Matisse: Paper Cutouts was published by Thames & Hudson in 1984.
Matisse’s gouaches découpées transformed painted paper and scissors into an entirely new artistic language. This beautifully produced large-format monograph brings together 157 illustrations, including 105 in color, with 51 large color plates and several folding plates.
The book explores Matisse’s development of the paper cut-out technique, from its early use as a compositional tool to the extraordinary autonomous works of his final years. It also includes a catalogue of cut-outs held in public collections.
A wonderful vintage art book for collectors of Henri Matisse, modern art, French art, artist books, and mid-century graphic design.
A highly collectible first English edition and a particularly beautiful reference book on Matisse’s cut-outs.
