Georges Braque: Les Papiers Collés — Centre Georges Pompidou, 1982

A beautiful vintage exhibition catalogue devoted entirely to Georges Braque and his pioneering papiers collés — the paper collage works that became one of the defining innovations of Cubism.

Published in conjunction with the landmark Georges Braque: Les Papiers Collés exhibition at the Centre Georges Pompidou, Musée national d’art moderne in Paris, held from June 17 to September 27, 1982.

Rather than presenting Braque’s work as a general survey, this catalogue focuses on his groundbreaking use of collage and found paper. Beginning in 1912, Braque transformed fragments of newspaper, wallpaper, faux bois and other printed materials into elements of the artwork itself, challenging the traditional boundaries between painting and reality.

The catalogue presents 57 works from the exhibition, with numerous black-and-white and color reproductions, detailed work descriptions, chronology, bibliography, and exhibition history. Texts include contributions by Isabelle Monod-Fontaine, Dominique Bozo, Douglas Cooper, Pierre Daix, Edward F. Fry, Alvin Martin, and E. A. Carmean Jr.

A wonderful reference for collectors of Georges Braque, Cubism, collage, and early modern art, and a particularly special addition to a vintage art book library.
