A scarce and beautifully illustrated first edition devoted to Henri Matisse’s paintings and sculptures held in two of the Soviet Union’s most important museums: the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts in Moscow and the Hermitage Museum in Leningrad.

Published by Aurora Art Publishers in Leningrad in 1978, this large-format volume presents Matisse’s work across his career, with richly reproduced paintings and sculptures accompanied by detailed notes, references, bibliography, and exhibition history.

The collection includes important works from the former Shchukin and Morozov collections, including celebrated paintings such as The Red Room, The Painter’s Family, the Moroccan works, Dance, and Music.

An especially interesting book for collectors is its connection to the extraordinary history of French modern art in Russian collections. Matisse’s works entered major Russian collections before the Revolution and later became part of the collections of the Pushkin Museum and the Hermitage.
