A beautiful first edition French art book devoted to Henri Matisse’s extraordinary Chapelle du Rosaire in Vence.

Published in 1975 by Morel Éditeurs, this scarce French volume features text by Norbert Calmels and photography by Hélène Adant, documenting one of Matisse’s most ambitious and deeply personal projects.

Known as the Chapelle Matisse, the Chapel of the Rosary was created for the Dominican sisters of Vence between 1948 and 1951. Matisse designed the chapel as a complete work of art, from the architecture and stained-glass windows to the ceramic murals, furnishings, and liturgical objects.

Matisse considered the chapel the culmination of his artistic life. The interior is defined by the contrast between white walls, brilliant blue, green and yellow stained glass, and his remarkably economical black line drawings.

This volume brings together Hélène Adant’s evocative photographs of the chapel with Calmels’ French text, offering an intimate look at Matisse’s final monumental project.

A beautiful and collectible piece for Matisse collectors, lovers of French art and architecture, vintage photography, or the history of modern sacred art.

A rare glimpse into one of Matisse’s most extraordinary late works.
